When the forest calls to new love
The Meet Cute
Her hair had the iridescence of a mystical black bird. Her strides were careful and graceful. The sun filtered through the tall pines, casting shifting shadows across the forest floor. Every step she took was silent, almost reverent of the woods.
She stopped at a stream. The water tumbled over smooth stones like a song only she understood. She closed her eyes and inhaled the peace and coolness. Her trance was interrupted by a laugh in the distance….a warm, rolling laugh like soft thunder.
Across the stream, a man stood shirtless. His skin had a bronze glow typical of an outdoor lifestyle. He was attempting to create an Inuksuk at the edge of the water. He amused himself with his lack of grace.
“You ever try to stack rocks while a frog judges your every move?” he called out, gesturing to a bullfrog perched beside him.
Despite her reserved nature, she responded with a tease. “I try not to stack anything without a proper audience.”
“Then you’ll fit right in. Nature loves a good show.” He was immediately charmed by her and needed to know more……
“Hi, I’m Dominic.” She smiled shyly and replied, “I’m Lena,”
Chance Encounter
The following week, Lena is stretching after a solo hike when Dominic spots her from the clearing. He was leading an outdoor yoga group. He approaches, “You stretch like someone who listens to their body. You should join my class Saturday.” She tried not to be obvious as she studied his muscular thighs. She felt things that she believed would only stay a distant memory.
Rising Connection
Lena arrived before the other students. Dominic tries to contain his childlike excitement. Instead, he leans into the breathwork, hoping he can stay present for the class. Afterwards, they walk together and talk about their love of nature. Dominic mentions that he used to teach high school literature, but now does mindfulness coaching outdoors: “Turns out trees are easier to manage than teenagers.”
The walks continue…….
A few weeks later, he asks her to go camping. “We can go to my favorite spot near a waterfall.” She hesitates, but curiosity wins. They talk about intimacy—not physical, but emotional. Dominic opens up about burnout, Lena about the walls she has built around herself.
Sparks ignite
Entranced by the flickering fire and the sounds of cicadas, Lena waits for Dominic's return to the sight.
He brought some mint leaves he’d picked near the water. As he finds a spot near her to settle, he says softly, “You’re hard to read.” “That’s intentional,” she murmurs. Silence stretches, thick and magnetic. He turns toward her. “You let the forest see you more than you let people.” She looks up at him slowly. “The forest doesn’t ask questions.” He reaches, fingers brushing her wrist. “I won’t ask. But I’ll stay if you want me to.”
She leans in as a quiet invitation.
Heat Beneath the Pines
Dusk settled over the trees, brushing the forest in shadow. His lips moved down her neck, stopping just before the pulse. “Tell me if you want me to stop,” he murmured. “I want more,” she replied, eyes heavy. She traced the long lines of his back as if committing them to memory. Above them, the moon rose. And Lena—wildflower, dancer, woman of the woods—finally let herself bloom.
